Moreover, Cosette was not very timid by nature. There flowed in her veins some of the blood of the bohemian and the adventuress who runs barefoot. It will be remembered that she was more of a lark than a dove. There was a foundation of wildness and bravery in her.

Cosette Fauchelevent has not always led the easiest of lives, but she's put the past firmly behind her. That she knows very little of her own story troubles her at time, yes, but she's learned to be happy with the life she has and her beloved father. Even so, there's an adventuress locked away in her heart, waiting for a chance to break beyond the garden gates and experience something new. She comes to Darrow from her garden late one night in April 1832.
